What is better, finishing inline or offline (nearline)?

Is inline ever a good idea without a specific application to justify it? Is it better on black and white that it is on color?

What is the best inline finishing option out there?

We went with a nearline system because it gives us the flexiblity to run B/W or colour or a combination of both.

This is the system we bought:

Works just as well as any of the online setups that I've used (Docutech and Heidelberg 9110 saddle stitchers). We just finished a job that was 3 books, 15 flats B/W, colour covers, for 850 copies each (2250 total). Ran awesome, sure beats doing it the old way.
