Is anybody out there perfect binding books printed full colour on the iGen? Our first attempt did not work well, we did a test which seemed to work fine, then we ran 400 copies (pp160). They all came apart after binding. The bindery used PUR glue, and the maximum amount of grind. The stock was 100# Centura Dull Text for the guts, and 100# Centura Dull Cover for the cover. The cover was printed outside only.

Xerox is blaming the glue. The bindery is blaming the fuser oil. If we bind unprinted stock, it works fine, which kind of leads us to side with the bindery.

So who else is perfect binding full colour books on coated stock, and how are you doing it?

We've done a lot of binding and have seen some binderys using the wrong glue. Xerox has some recommendations for proper glue to be used for the fuser fluid. I can't remember it off hand. Other options are to smyth sew or stitch signatures of the device prior to binding. Costs more, but the results are much better overall.

We currently have a Bourg Book Factory running in-line with the iGen3. There is a specific glue that Xerox and CP Bourg recommends for this configuration. I am at home right now and don't know the part number off hand. If you are using a CP Book Book Factory, call CP Bourg. They can help you with the part number.

Most people have issues with the cover not adhearing when printing on the inside front and back of the cover. Here is where the fuser fluid really comes into play. DO NOT print in the inside spine area, the book will fall apart in your hands, regardless of the type of glue used.

There is an incompatibility with some hot melt glues and the fuser oil used in the iGen. Actually, this is true with any digital press that uses hot contact fusing. I believe that Xerox re-formulated the fuser fluid in the past year, but don't quote me on that...

As for perfect binding coated stock book blocks, finding the right glue that is compatible with the fuser fluid will fix most problems. The configuration that we are currently using (mentioned above) works in both cases.

It is all about the glue...

I fought this for a long time untill I found the right glue and now no more problems..

So I'd like to dig up this old topic again. We are a full-service trade bindery and we purchased a Horizon BQ 270 2 years ago. We've never really had any problems perfect binding iGen books until recently when we start to see an increase in books with inside covers printed. I know it has something to do with the Fuser Oil - all our books are popping off the cover! What type of glue are you using Dale? I'd like to look into it more. In addition, why does the iGen specifications say that the ideal perfect binders for books printed on the iGen includes the Horizon BQ 270 but the books don't bind????
Thanks!

We are using an old sulby 5 clamp perfect binder. Some one recommended using Bourg 043 adhesive (part # 9195043) to help with our problem of adhering covers to fuzer oil coated top and bottom sheets of books. We are looking for answers.

Any one have success with a particular adhesive on igen3 and igen4 produced books?

Hello Dale,

Thanks for the White Paper, I've passed it onto production.

Ipinalb,

The only solution seems to be using PUR glue adhesive.
