Does anyone else here have a problem with cracking when folding digitally printed material? I have tried changing the grain direction and scoring but i still get cracking. I have heard that a creaser can be used to remedy this, does anyone here have expierience with creasers or have you seen them demoed?

We use a Morgana Digifolder which can crease and / or fold digital print.

It is only one speed, slow... But it works with really heavy stock and has been very reliable but can be difficult at times.

For longer runs we use our diecutter to score the materials and for more complex needs.

Grain direction makes the biggest difference, as well as coverage area. Also your fuser settings can effect cracking, if it isn't completely fused, it will crack pretty easily.

Thanks Patrick yes we have been considering getting the Morgana Digifolder and I gladly will if I can be sure it will put an end to this problem, sorry if I sound naive but what makes a creaser different from a scorer?
patrick
Well, nothing and everything depending on who you talk to.

They basically mean the same thing. I don't know the technical difference.

We went with a product called Tri Creaser from Technifold and this has solved most if not all our issues. Mounts directly to the existing scoring shaft on the folder

At my job we use prefolded docufolders or manual scoring. Docufolders are usually less work but cause more stoppages (they jam at the top of the magazine). Heavy gloss papers seem to be the most prone to cracking with uncoated and cotton pappers being the most tolerant. Generally papers over 250 g/m2 crack when not scored. For saddlebacks finished in the Canon IP7000 we use 170 or 210 g covers.

We use the Morgana AutoCreaser23/50 for most jobs and use a technifold tri-creaser for longer runs. The morgana works great on thick paper and shorts runs. Speed leaves a bit to be desired but it works wonders on digital print. It is also very consistent when set up properly and only really needs someone to refill it. I have run the folder and the Morgana both at the same time and a good operator can do it pretty easily. The tricreaser attacheds to the drive roller on your folder and scores in line. It is very fast and does a good job. If your folder does not have a very good registration guide you will have to check the skew on the score frequently as it will vary bit by bit as you run the job.

I definitely need to bump this. As a trade bindery, ALL of our equipment is equipped with Technifold's Tri-Creaser system. Works like a charm but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
