DocuTech™ 6180 Production Publisher and PowerPlus Series or Nuvera™ 144 Digital Production System?

Has anyone been researching Xerox production black and white equipment? DocuTechs have become a standard; however, the new Nuvera products offer some improvements and lack other capabilities.

Is there are question? Which do you get these days?

one big difference is paper capacity, especially for legal or ledger size - you will not have the same capacity wtih Nuvera as you did with DTs. If you are mainly printing letter size jobs, then go for new.

That is a very good point. I had not considered the paper size limitation of the Nuvera.

We just bought a new B/W production printer. Xerox was pushing us really hard at the Nuvera. They gave us a list of three references, shops that owned Nuveras. Every one of them said, "get a Docutech". Apparently there are still some issues with the longevity of the photoreceptor belt. One shop said they were averaging around 10,000 impressions per belt. That's not a typo, 10,000! That would be a belt a day for us. And it's not operator serviceable.

In the end we got a sweet deal on a Canon Imagerunner 150+. Six input trays, high capacity stacker, inline punch, 9000 sheets per hour. No complaints so far...

I bet Xerox was pleased to be beat out by a Canon. That is not good news about the belt on the nuevera! Xerox should learn there customer a little better. I presume they knew your volumes. Putting you in contact with Nuevera users who are going to reveal to you something that would so obviously be a problem in your enviroment.

Do you have a DocuTech? If so, how does that compare to the Canon?

Yep, they knew our volumes. And yep, they were not pleased when they found out we went with a Canon. Especially when we had to call them two days later to get them to move the 6135 over to make room for the Canon. Hehehehe...

We have a Docutech 6135 (DocuSP controller) and a XDOD workstation.

Comparison?

Image quality: Canon
But our 6135 is older, newer Docutechs might be better. And the Canon is a bit too dark in the halftones, we are working on that with them.

Productivity: Canon
With 6 input trays, a huge stacker (with a cart, like the iGen) and an almost straight paper path, the Canon is awesome. The optional inline 3hole/cerlox punch that we have has been quite useful as well.

Service: Xerox
I got to say it: Xerox service is the best in the business. The last service call we had on the Canon, the Ikon techs showed up 4 hours after the time they told us they would be here. And then they took their own sweet ass time getting the job done.

DFE/Job programming: Xerox
The Canon RIP/software is just not as refined as the DocuSP. In fact, no one seems to know much about the RIP attached to the Canon at all. Even the Canon guys.

Anything else in specific you'd like to know, just ask.

Is the DFE on the Canon an EFI DFE?
silversurfer
Nope not EFI. It's a literal 'black box' attached to the back of the machine. The machine operation and RIP are integrated. One of the techs said it's a 'Lionheart' RIP. I think it was developed by Kodak.

These machines aren't actually made by Canon. They are re-badged Heidelberg/Kodak machines. I'm sure if Canon did develop them, it would be a Fiery attached.

Is it similar to the E125 or the 9110, the canon box? Just curious...

The Canon Imagerunner 110/150 are the same as the Heidelberg 9110/9150.
