Full Version: Looking for a good slitter

Greetings. Looking to hear if anyone has a recommendation for a good slitter / slicer. Ideally one that could also do scoring and perfing.

Thanks.

We've got the Duplo 645 slitter/cutter/scorer, works well. We got it in November and it was just awesome though the christmas season. Makes short work of christmas/greeting cards.

However: the business card option isn't that great. By the time you get it all tweaked up and running, you could have cut the cards out on the guillotine twice, and the results are only adequate in my opinion. And the 'registration mark' and 'barcode' features are equally useless, both slow the machine to a crawl.

We are getting the perf option soon, I'll let you know how that works.

Thanks for the info. That is dissapointing about the barcode feature. That is a feature that had always sounded really cool. What else did you look at before the purchase? Did you look at the Morgana products at all? We just started looking at those; it is a little to early to have thoughts to share yet, but soon.

I would definately like to hear more about the per option once you have it.

The barcode feature sounds really cool until you find out what it actually does. All it can do is select a template (pre-made by you) from the machine on the fly. So you can put muliple jobs in the feeder and it can select templates using the barcode. However, this would mean that all of those jobs would have to be on the same size and weight of paper in order for that to work well. And like I said, reading the barcodes takes about a second per sheet or more, so it kinda defeats the purpose.

What is cool however, is there is a JDF controller availible for this machine. So if you are using imposition software such as Preps or anything that can output JDF instructions, you could have the template built and downloaded to the machine automatically. I'm sure it doesn't work as well as they say, but it's a step in the right direction.

I didn't make any of the purchasing decisions, so I don't know much about the Morgana products. As far as I know, the slitter/scorer was a bit of an 'impluse buy'.

And we're still waiting on the perf option.

That is good information. I did not realize that about the barcode limitations. Does the JDF addon support JMF response data back to any systems?
