Full Version: Getting an iGen in June 07'

Hey whats up everyone? Im new to the forums. This is a great site. Im an print operator running 2 6060's. They're being replaced in June for an iGen. I have been running these 6060's for almost 3 years now and have about 12 million impressions combined. We have had alot of downtime on both machines, however I feel that it is due in part to the type of stock I use. A large part of our business are 8.5" by 5.5" postcards 4-up on 18" x 12" 10 pt. 133lb. Digital C1S. I was wondering how this type of stock would perform on an iGen. Does anyone have any input on running heavy stock on an iGen? I was also wondering how the learning curve would be going from a DocuColor 6060 with an EFI RIP to an iGen110 with a DocuSP. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Joe, Congrats.

The iGen3 will run that stock without many issues C1S tends to tear up fusers a bit faster then C2S but as long as its on the RML you should be fine. The biggest difference will be the speed of it. You will be amazed at how fast it runs.

Biggest changes are the parts, and doing the maintenence compared to the 6060s and the overall size of the iGen3 compared to the 6060.

Going from an EFI controller to a DocuSP will be different, but not a huge learning curve.

The other biggest difference will be the size of the sheet you can run, and the tighter front to back registration.

Good luck with your install.

Joe,

Welcome. Glad to have you on the site! Wow, a new Igen, that is exciting. The heavy weight stocks will scream in comparison to running them on the 6060.

Patrick mentioned the RML (recommended materials list). I would stress the importance of a stock from that list for the application you mentioned. If it is something you will be running that much of, you just do not want the headache of a stock that is not supported.

I personally loved the DocuSP when it was released for color. Like any RIP, it has its problems and limitations; however, I really liked it.

The press can be a bit more intimidating than the little 6060s, but once you get over that and learn the maintenance you should be fine. Many / Most of the Igen techs I have worked with were great. Originally Xerox setup the Igen service teams with the pick of the liter. I don't know if that has been diluted much, but originally it made for some great service teams.

Cheers,
John

Good to hear, the iGen is a great addition to a print shop. We too used to run two 6060's and upgraded to two iGen3 110's with the DocuSP controller. The paper you will be using should be as close as possible in comparison to what is on the RML. A good thing to keep in mind is the RML is exactly that... recommended(when you see the RML most stocks are Xerox). We do hundreds of different jobs averaging about 150,000 to 200,000 impressions a day between the two with about every weight variance and size variance the iGen can handle. As long as you have the weight and thickness of a similar media, it should run fine. We use a few stocks that are not in the RML and just use one that is as close to the original as possible. When you run heavier stocks, they will tend to wear out your fuser roll faster, but as long as Xerox sets you up with a spare set of parts for the fuser roll, you can change one out and be back to imaging in about twenty minutes. The learning curve is not that bad if you have been running the 6060's as long as you have. The class they give on the iGen3 covers EVERYTHING about the iGen3, and in my opinion is geared towards new color/Xerox operators and is VERY informative.
