Our file server is what the IT guys call a "Network Appliance". It's basically a RAID with a fibre connection running a stripped down version of Unix.

Works awesome, the entire shop basically works from the server. No files are stored on local machines.

The server also create 6 hourly 'snapshots', so if you delete a file and you realize that you needed it (within 6 hours) you can grab it from the snapshot.

silversurfer,

that sounds like a nice solution. do you happen to know the manufacturer name?

Apparently the name is Network Appliance. I think the one we have is this: S500.

But I'm not entirely sure. Our IT department thinks they are the CIA or something (everything is on a 'need to know' basis).
